I came across this chart by accident and I find it so powerful because it tells a very compelling story about the current economic downturn.  This chart explains why the financial meltdown of 2009 is unusual and unique.  What you will notice is that in almost all years the S&P500 varies between 0-20% and that is why it is fair to say that we are in depression.
